2015 Holiday Gift Guide {Hostess Gifts}

Hello and Happy Monday!! I hope you are all well and had a wonderful Thanksgiving and (hopefully) long weekend. My weekend kicked off with a delicious dinner at Levant, a BurnCycle Turkey Burn, and a scrumptious Thanksgiving dinner. I decorated for the holidays and co-hosted a very fun brunch! I feel somewhat recharged, and ready for the madness that is the month of December.

Now that we have covered $25 and Under Gifts and My Favorite Things it is time to discuss hostess gifts!

And be sure to come back tomorrow for the final installment of my 2015 Holiday Gift Guide AND find out how you can enter the giveaway!

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving and I have so much to be grateful for - namely, all of you and this blog. I am so touched and honored that you all take the time to read along, comment and support everything I do. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Now that we've covered the $25 and Under holiday gifts, let's discuss My Favorite Things. This list includes experiences, kitchen products, and most are gender-neutral and couple friendly.

I hope you have a wonderful and relaxing holiday weekend. Be sure to come back Monday for my last two guides, and the giveaway!

Theater and event tickets are a great gift for friends, family or professionals. An event like a play can be one of the most long-lasting and valuable gifts you can provide. An experience creates memories and allows for loved ones to spend quality time together. In Portland, PCS puts on phenomenal productions with world-class casts and creatives.

Give this to: Boss / Parents / Siblings / Best Friends / New Parents

Jord Wood Watches

Perfume and watches are life necessities I would never buy for myself. These are gift-only possessions. I am particularly fond of these wood watches from Jord. They are not only stylish, but keep up with the PNW lifestyle.

Whether someone is a novice in the kitchen or a professional chef, a great knife will be a welcome and regularly used gift. A quality knife can get a young adult excited about cooking, or help your family's Ina Garten get to the next level.

Le Tote Gift Certificate

Have a girlfriend who has everything? Or a sister who is afraid to branch out over her shift dresses and cardigans? Why not give them a gift certificate to Le Tote? Le Tote is a monthly clothing subscription service. Each month, a stylist curates five clothing and accessory items (which can be edited) that you get to try out for the month! It is such a great way to try out a new trend or experiment with expanding your style! They also have a line for expectant moms!

Give this to: Sister / Work Bestie / Mom / Aunt / Cousin / Mama-to-Be

Gift Certificate to Urban Waxx

A gift certificate for a wax? Yes!! I highly recommend giving your closest friends and family members a gift certificate to their favorite spas or boutiques. One of my biggest pet peeves during the holidays is giving just to give - not giving a thoughtful gift that is useful for the recipient. Show that you listen and know them. Not only does Urban Waxx offer great services, they also carry top skin care items, Serious Serum, and jewelry.

Give this to: Best Friend / Sister / Significant Other / Cousin

Have wine lovers on your list? Instead of a bottle, gift a membership! This surprising collection of wines, from one of Oregon's most renowned wineries, will surprise and excite even the most worldy wine drinker. And, it is a tasty experience!

Give this to: Boss / Parents / Significant Other / Sibling / Cousin / Best Friend

Bitterman's Salt Co. Salt Block + Salt Block Cook Book

Learning is one of the greatest gifts you can give anyone - or yourself, for that matter. A tasty learning experience? Well that is the ultimate! This summer I took a Salt Block cooking class and instantly knew it would be on the list. I recommend this for anyone with B or above cooking skills and a passion for culinary activities.

Give this to: Foodie Friends / Supper Club Gals / Brother-in-Law / PR Friends / Parents

Seely Mint Patties

I LOVE giving gifts that transform  someone's opinion. These Seely Mint Patties will transform any Jr. Mint hater (ME!) into a complete addict. They are beautiful, tasty, and come from a 4th Generation Oregon Mint Farm. Perfection!

2015 Holiday Gift Guide {$25 and Under}

I'm so excited!! Today kicks off my 4-part holiday gift guide! These are all items I love, purchase, and many I will be gifting this holiday season. When selecting gifts I am committed to finding great businesses that create products or experiences that make sense for the recipient and occasion. I also like to respect my budget. And just because a gift is $25 or less does not mean it isn't thoughtful and valuable.

Be sure to stop by tomorrow, Monday and Tuesday - when I will be announcing the most amazing holiday giveaway - for the rest of my guides!

Lifestyle {Stress Free Entertaining}

I think it is safe to say that holiday season is officially upon us. From now through early January I feel as though my weeks are filled with luncheons, cookie swaps, cocktail parties and errands. So many errands!

I will also be hosting or coordinating more than six events in the next six weeks. To pull that off - and not pull out my hair - it requires organization, vision and a really good attitude. Honestly, planning is half the fun for me. After coordinating more than 150 events in my life I have honed in on the best way for me to pull off seamless, fun events that I actually enjoy.

I was so honored when Paperless Post asked if I would like to share any tips to reduce the stress of holiday events. I have been using Paperless Post for years - just under 5 years to be precise - when planning events and parties. It is a beautiful, easy, and stylish tool for any hostess with the mostess. This post isn't sponsored and I received zero compensation. I honestly just love Paperless Post!!

When planning it is important to know what kind of party you want. This will determine all future decisions. What is the purpose or reason? A New Year's Day brunch is very different from a religious gathering. This will impact the location, menu, guests and timing. Do you have a small, city apartment or a large, event space? Do you want to have an intimate gathering with girlfriends, or a boisterous night out with friends?

Paperless Post Bonus: With hundreds of designs there are so many stylish and beautiful invitation options, your theme will easily be conveyed. And if you really want to send invitations through the post, select designs are available for print!

Google docs! Google docs! Google docs!!

A master list of all the lists you need will help you get a handle on responsibilities and tasks far before the event. It will help you be fluent with your event. And they all compliment and inform one another.

Budget
Know how much you are willing and able to spend. Create a detailed list of items - butter, wine and cocktail napkins - and the estimated expense. When doing this I also indicate where these items will be purchased. Create this early on. It will help you find the best deals and make the most efficient choices. By pricing items out you may also realize it is more affordable to outsource items or tasks.

Guest List
Creating a guest list will let you estimate the number of items needed, any personality conflicts, and dietary needs. It also ties back to knowing what you want: People make the party! The guest list should be carefully crafted.

Paperless Post Bonus: Your email contacts can be linked or manually added. Once an address is added you never need to look it up again! A major time savor and avoids any typo mistakes.

Logistics + Errands
Know the logistics and chores that need to go into prep. From grocery shopping to picking up rentals, listing out everything that needs to happen will ensure everything happens seamlessly and relieve your stress. Having a plan puts you in control, so when unexpected surprises happen you can go with the flow.

Menu
After the guest list, the menu is the most important part. Create your menu at least three weeks prior. Determine any specialty items, serving dishes or rented items you may need to reserve or order. Also plan a menu that works with the kitchen space and will require minimal work from you during. Going to the store without a menu plan will be extremely expensive and stress you out.

Timeline
Write out a timeline of when things to happen. Like sending invites, rearranging furniture, and kindly asking those who have not RSVPd to reply.

Paperless Post Bonus: You can schedule reminders and event details ahead of time. I love to schedule the friendly reminder email with parking details and event-specific details weeks before it goes out. Another thing that is off my plate the week of.

Playlist
A playlist is such an important part of a party, and often one of the most neglected details. As soon as the invite goes out, I start working on my playlist. Whenever I have a few extra minutes in an Uber or some down time I will add songs to the list. Learning to take care of this piece has been a huge stress-reliever for me. I'm no longer scrambling to find a station or old playlist 10-minutes before guests arrive.

Leading up to the party, be sure to discuss the event with those who will be attending! It will get them, and you, excited for the party and will allow for you to flush out any details. I have also found it is extremely helpful during the event. If your closest friends know your vision, they will notice that you forgot to put out the beautiful, fruit-filled ice ring and save the punch! They can also help facilitate any interactions or games you may have planned.

This rule of thumb will change your life!! For any party 70% of the tasks and projects should be completed the day before. This means grocery shopping, food prep, decorations, etc. The day of you should have no more than 30% of the work to do. If food can't be prepped beforehand, if decorations can't be procured or errands can't be run, readjust. In my experience, the day-of should not be overly stressful. There should be down time and space to relax.

Lifestyle {Holiday Makeup with Blush Beauty Bar}

If you are like me, holiday parties begin this weekend. From Friendsgivings to cocktail parties stepping up the makeup game is a must. That doesn't mean (m)any of us are suddenly capable of pulling off Adele-level eyeliner. I decided to ask the ladies over at Blush Beauty Bar for holiday makeup recommendations.

Read on for the 5 Must-Have products and to see my holiday look!

Recipe {Tahini-Honey Eggplant with Yogurt and Pomegranate Seeds}

As an active and serial dater there are several types of romantic entanglements. Expiration dating; having fun, but knowing it isn't going anywhere. On-paper dating; he checks all the boxes, but the chemistry just isn't there. And then there is long-term dating; meeting the parents, shared finances, and showing your true hangry. My relationship with this tahini-honey roasted eggplant is long term. I've shown him my true appetite (an entire eggplant for dinner), shared the relationship on social media, and stayed over more than twice in one week. I see a pomegranate colored ring in my future!

What is really beautiful about this recipe is the ability to make it your own. The quantities are up to you. The drizzle of olive oil is in your control. Same goes for the salt. Maybe you are heavy on the yogurt, light on the pomegranate seeds.

I would recommend this as a side, main, brunch, or comforting lunch. And if you are looking for a vegetarian Thanksgiving side, look no further!!

Tahini-Honey Dressing

2TBS Tahini Paste
1 TBS Honey
2 TBS high-quality olive oil
Juice of one large lemon
Salt + Pepper

Whisk together all ingredients until creamy. Let sit for at least one hour, and up to 4 days.

Eggplant
1 large eggplant, sliced into discs
Olive Oil
Sea Salt
3 Springs fresh thyme

Greek Yogurt
1/3 cup pomegranate seeds

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Drizzle a 9x13 glass baking dish with olive oil. Spread out oil and lay eggplant discs in one layer. Generously salt the eggplant and let sit for 10-15 minutes.

2. Using a pastry brush or back of a spoon, paint or brush the tahini-honey dressing on the top of the eggplant discs. Top with thyme and bake on middle rack for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.

3. Top eggplant discs with a dollop of yogurt and sprinkle of pomegranate seeds. Enjoy!

#ThursdayToursPDX {Markets + Makers}

Oh hey, mid-November, how you doin'?? As we keep mentioning, the holidays have arrived. That means plenty of entertaining, pot lucks, and festive meals. Which clearly calls for a lot of grocery shopping. Knowing all of this, we decided to ask two of Portland's most stylish and classy taste makers where they purchase their ingredients!

Brooke Adams is a director at Little Green Pickle and one of the sweetest people I have met in Portland. She has a tasty background - having worked with Le Cirque's Sirio Maccioni and running Eately's communication - and is married to an incredibly talented pastry chef. A BA recommendation is a shiny, golden seal on anything, and everything!

Be sure to head on over to Bakery Bingo to find out where Elizabeth Roberts of Feast shops!

Lifestyle {St. Reginald's Parish Wine}

 I sit here writing this blog post after one hell of a Monday. You know the Monday, with 250 emails, a bloated body and the inability to focus. We all have them. Luckily, I am being comforted by a glass of St. Reginald Parish's Pilgrimage. A friendly pinot noir. Yes, wines can be friendly. And sassy. Some are aggressive. Perhaps harsh. This one is a seasoned friend you can laugh with, cry with, and just be yourself with. It is also one of the most versatile pinots I have ever had. It elevates my red sauce pasta, yet brightens my satsuma oranges. Yes, the bachelorette life is advanced.

Is St. Reginald Parish sounding familiar? It is because winemaker, Andy Young, contributed to Thursday Tours awhile back. I am a big believer that the maker truly transforms the final product. Andy is a Southern Gent who puts his heart and soul into the wine. He is a warm and good natured guy, the kind of person you instantly open up to - just like his wines!

It is for all of these reasons that I recommend the St. Reginald Parish wines - Pilgrimage or Congregation - be served at your Thanksgiving table. It will pair beautifully with turkey and all the fixings, and be a part of conversations with those you are most thankful for.

St. Reginald Parish wines can be purchased at Europa, Liner + Elsen, E&R Wine Shop, and Storyteller. The $35-$40 bottles may also be purchased online.

And speaking of Thanksgiving, be sure to head on over to The Spicy Bee to find my recipe for pumpkin bread stuffing!!

People {Sex with Stranger's Danielle and Chris}

Remember a few weeks ago when I was raving about Portland Center Stage's production of Sex with Strangers? Well I had the opportunity to sit down with the play's stars and discuss the production, Portland and their undeniable chemistry. Both Danielle Slavik (Olivia) and Christopher M. Smith (Ethan) were incredibly gracious, hilarious and so kind. Our pastry date immediately turned into a well-paced conversation - them, just as curious and inquisitive about me.

Danielle is originally from Ohio but has been living and acting in New York since the early 2000s. She has the self-deprecating sense of humor of a true Brooklyn-ite, but with small town sweetness. Fun fact, she had never been to a Target until coming to Portland!

Chris grew up in Southern California is one of six - we immediately engaged in some Catholic banter - but now resides in New York. His resting face is in no way bitchy, but more, well, "good looking man who thinks."

For more insight into my questions go over and read my review, or even better, go see the play!! It is running through November 22nd at the Ellen Bye Studio.

What blogs do you read?
Danielle: While she doesn't read any blogs, she DID read Martha Chartreuse in preparation for our meeting.
Chris: He doesn't read blogs, but he did read The Average American Male by Chad Kultgen in preparation.

If you were to write a memoir, what would it be called?
D: Smile, you're gonna die soon.
C: I guess, if you wanna read it?!

Weirdest PDX Experience
They both agreed that Portland's weirdness doesn't hold a candle to NYC.

Social media of choice.
D: Hotmail.
C: Facebook and Twitter

They were both curious (and kind) as I took photos of our treats at Maurice. I'm almost confident it was their first interaction with Instagram.

Have your parents seen the play?
D: Next week! Which is really this week. Welcome to Portland, Mr. and Mrs. Slavick!
C: His father came up from California. When I followed up how his father felt about the promiscuous play, he let me know that his father is always proud when he is the center of attention - pants or not.

Do you watch House of Cards?
They had both only seen a few episodes.

Where does on-stage chemistry come from?
D: She credited good looks and Chris' ability to handle her mockery.
C: Insert charming facial expressions, sex jokes and a boyish shrug.

For me, this was the most intriguing question. From the moment they sat down, their connection and friendship was undeniable. In their body language and conversation it was very clear how close they are. They had no answer or formula, which is really telling of real-life chemistry. There isn't a guide or formula for the sparks. We have no metaphorical kindling, newspaper or logs. It just is what it is.

During the play, what is in all of those wine glasses?
Tremendously sweet cranberry and white grape juice.

Go-to Drink
D: Coffee milkshakes and flaming Spanish coffee. She is a big fan of Clyde's Common.
C: Bourbon

Yes or no; google your date?
D: She shared that her dating history has been unique and online dating has not been part of her life. She seemly genuinely perplexed by the concept.
C: Never!

Best PDX Meal
D: Mother's for brunch.
C: Tasty & Alder, Stella Taco

PDX To-Do List
D: Pips, Forest Park, Kennedy School
C: Pok Pok

Beauty {Blush Beauty Bar Eyebrow Threading + Beauty Boost Facial}

If you follow me on Snapchat you know that last week I had the chance to visit Blush Beauty Bar on NW 23rd and try out several of their beauty services. Blush is a locally owned beauty boutique, carrying top beauty lines and products. From Lorac to Clarisonics they have an excellent selection of beauty products. From well-known companies like Essie, Bare Minerals and Stila, they also carry brands such as RMS and Ilia, their inventory is diverse.

Eyebrow before and after

In addition to high-end makeup, top skincare systems, and favorite hair care lines, they also provide beauty services. I had the pleasure of hanging out with Olivia and having her shape and thread my brows, then provide me with a Beauty Boost facial.  A lovely Friday treat if I do say so myself!

The process of threading.

Since 90% of our time was spent with my eyes closed and her touching my face it was key that our communication was clear and I was put at ease. Olivia did just that, by quickly pacing with my fast-paced chatter and barage of questions - answer, Gwen Stefani has the best celebrity eyebrows! - I immediately felt comfortable and trusted her. A real necessity when someone is ripping your hair out and steaming your face. She talked me through what she was doing and the reasoning behind her decisions. We talked about my brow shape, products and my personal style. And it resulted in a complete eyebrow transformation!

The products used during my beauty boost

When it came to the facial I never, ever felt like she was pushing product on me. It was an honest conversation about my skincare needs, concerns and my budget. You see, skincare can be really expensive and I have zero interest in dropping Benjamins on creams or oils. She advised me which products would have the highest ROI for me now, and where I can cut costs. Again, building the trust!

Eyebrow Threading

What exactly is threading? Well, it is the original method for removing hair. Before hot wax, lasers or stinky creams. Yes, brows were on fleek long before J.C. was bee-boppin' around the world. And not the N'Sync member.

What were my impressions? Olivia did such a nice job and really transformed my brow shape. As my first first appointment she focused on our goals and getting the right shape for my bone structure and personal style. Threading is not painless - I would compare it to quick razor blade pricks - but no more than any other hair removal experience I have had.
Is this right for you? Do you have sensitive skin, sloppy brows or a special occasion coming up? If you said yes to any of these filters then threading is right for you! For me, wax on my face usually results in a rash and weird bumps for a few days after. With threading all of that is avoided. Olivia is such a talent and will quickly coach your brows into excellence! If you are getting married or want to look great for the holidays start booking your appointments. Please note that it can take 3-6 months to grow brows out, so get in there now if you are a 2016 bride!
Cost: $22

Beauty Boost

Think of this as a mini-facial that is the perfect test-drive for products and a skincare routine! While everyone's experience will be different based on their skin type and needs. Olivia did a great job of explaining each product, it is purpose, pros and cons for me personally, and specific instructions. Morning vs. Night. In the shower or with my Clarisonic. The best part is that right after your facial you can apply the $50 to any in-store purchase!! It is pretty much a super high-end test drive for skin care products.
What were my impressions? I felt like this was the perfect way to check out a lot of products how they are meant to be used. As much as I love a soft hand, it really isn't the best way to try out an eye cream or exfoliator. My thumb does not have blackheads, my nose does. Not to mention the steaming and hand massage. That was a very welcome bonus at the end of a busy week!
Is this right for you? If you are looking to adjust or elevate your skincare routine I would highly recommend booking the Beauty Boost. It is great for beauty-addicts and for those who are complete clueless when it comes to creams, serums and peels!
Cost: $50

While these services were provided at no-charge all opinions and impressions are my own. I am committed to recommending experiences and businesses that I personally enjoy and frequent.

And a big thank you to Desiree for taking these photos!!
