#ThursdayToursPDX {Healthy Living}

Thursday, January 7, 2016

After a season bountiful in wine, puff pastry wrapped treats, and so many cheese dips it is time to reset. This means recalibrating sleeping habits, getting the heart pumping, and healthier eating. None of this means you have to give up going out to restaurants or entertainment. In fact, I would highly recommend eating out in Portland to get healthy eats and inspiration.

It is for these very reasons that the first #ThursdayToursPDX of 2016 is bringing you healthy living options. Judiaann Woo, the Director of Global Communications for Travel Oregon, and the entire Travel Oregon team are all about balance. Buttery pastries in the morning, scenic hikes in the afternoon. I think it is safe to say their motto might be, "Have your cake, and burn it off too!" - Something #ThursdayToursPDX is all about as well!

Don't forget to head over to Bakery Bingo for Mary of The Kitchen Paper's recommendations!

Sweet Lemon Vegan Bistro specializes in fusion vegan cuisine with dishes inspired by Asian and American cuisine. The unique menu—featuring wraps, noodles, soups, raw dishes, salads and more that are 100% vegan, non-GMO and organic (when possible)--is designed to bring a “positive and uplifting” dining experience. The owners of the restaurant are inspired by their “spiritual teacher,” Supreme Master Ching Hai, who advocates a compassionate way of living and eating a vegan diet.

The Cruise in Country Diner is not your ordinary burger joint. This classic diner serves all-natural grass-fed beef and buffalo, lean alpaca meat, and hormone-free chicken and fish. Buns are organic, as is the coffee and tea (from local Longbottom Coffee), and all ingredients are locally grown or sourced, and organic, when possible. Fries are cooked in rice oil, which is one of the healthiest oils available. As a bonus, the owner, Terry Hummel, is eager to discuss the health benefits of organic foods, as well as other benefits of healthy eating.

Four nights a week, a lively dinner party assembles at Farm Spirit, Portland’s newest vegan tasting menu restaurant. Conceived by Aaron Adams — a founder of local favorite Portabella Vegan Trattoria — this cozy space lets 14 diners taste seasonally inspired, locally driven preparations at a chef’s counter. The multi-course, plant-based prix fixe menu ($55 to $65 per person) can be augmented with wine pairings or house-made juices, kefir, kombucha, fermented sodas and tisanes. Check online to see what’s in the pantry and chiller for the night’s meal, like fresh berries, stone fruits and tomatoes that share artfully designed plates with Abenaki polenta, local quinoa, Japanese turnips, Emmer farro and Douglas fir.

Broth Bar, founded by Tressa Yellig and sister Katie Yellig, is Portland’s first dedicated bone broth café. Inspired initially by her German grandmother’s traditional approach to cooking, and a passion for the healing effects of food, Tressa Yellig has spent the last six years building a community around nourishing foods through her retail shop, product line and community supported kitchen, Salt, Fire and Time. Bone broth is considered an old world healing remedy. What makes Broth Bar’s bone broth stand above the rest is that Yellig sources bones directly from farmers and ranchers in the Pacific Northwest who raise their animals on pasture, grass-fed and grass-finished (and hormone, antibiotic and GMO-free). Broth Bar is also the retail shop for Salt, Fire and Time’s line of jarred bone broths, coconut yoghurt, packaged jerkies and other nourishing foods.

#ThursdayToursPDX is a collaborative series between Portland, OR bloggers {Erin} Bakery Bingo + {Meredith} Martha Chartreuse. In a city filled with amazing restaurants, artisan experiences, and fantastic tastemakers the inside scoop is a must. We will be asking our friends and fellow bloggers for their recommendations and tips for all the City of Roses has to offer
