It's Getting Hot Out There {Blackberry + Grapefruit Spritzer}

Please forgive my take on Nelly lyrics for this post's title, the sun makes me do crazy things!!  Portland is experiencing some very warm weather (it is supposed to hit 89 on Thursday!!) and things are getting fun!  Outdoor everything is in effect and happiness is beaming from every corner of the city.

This great weather is also the perfect excuse to cool down with a refreshing cocktail!  I am not a big fan of sweet,sugary cocktails but like to occasionally mix up my vodka+club soda or red wine routine.  So, for yesterday's neighborhood happy hour I pulled together a light and fruity cocktail that complimented the weather.  Please know I will be making these every night this week!

Also, please forgive the haphazard photography!!  The sun was calling my name!

Weekend Highlights {Broder Nord, The Meadows, Dutch Baby}

Hello Lovelies!!  I hope you all had a glorious weekend!  Mine was very relaxed and fun.  I had zero obligations and was able to do exactly what I wanted.  I realized last week that this was my first weekend since November that didn't have commitments, tasks or chores.  I didn't even have my meals planned!  I was able to have a really fun brunch with a friend and went on a few walks, but, a majority of the time was spent on the sofa.   I am secure enough to admit I binge-watched Grey's Anatomy.  I also watched American Hustle (no idea what all the fuss is about) and philosophized with the dog.

Broder Nord
On Saturday, a friend and I went to Broder Nord!  While I am a big, big fan of the original location I hadn't made it to the new spot in North Portland.  Both locations specialize in Swedish food, hospitality and overall goodness!  We arrived around 10:30am and were seated immediately!!!  That is absolutely unheard of for the Portland Brunch scene.  Or any brunch scene, I am sure!  We started off with coffee and I was pleasantly surprised that they steamed the milk.  A simple step that makes all the difference.  Another great thing about Broder is that most of the breakfast options come with sides that can be sweet or savory.  Honestly, it is almost like breakfast tapas!  It allows for anyone to get a nice balance of menu items without breaking the bank OR over ordering.  I imagine I will be back sooner rather than later.

 Drip coffee with steamed milk!

 I had the Swedish Meatballs with walnut toast, a potato pancake and half a grapefruit {not pictured}

My friend had the chevre egg bake with a side of walnut toast and an apple fritter!

The Meadows
After breakfast we headed up to North Mississippi to walk around and continue our conversation.  My friend, Jessica, is one of the smartest, sweetest and most interesting people I know.  We never run out of things to talk about!  North Mississippi is a very hip street filled with awesome restaurants and really fun shops.  The Meadows specializes in salt, chocolate, bitters and flowers.  If you are ever in Portland I highly recommend stopping by one of the shops.  It is a truly beautiful experience and lovely space.  I was especially smitten with the fresh flowers.

Dutch Baby + The Highest Compliment

On Sunday morning I wanted to make something special for breakfast but failed to plan for bacon, french toast or eggs benedict when grocery shopping.  Using what I had, I pulled together a GIANT dutch baby pancake.  It ended up being far too big, but, has been added to my "must make" list for visitors and at-home brunch events.

And on Sunday evening I received the HIGHEST compliment from a dear friend and one of Martha Chartreuse's biggest supporters; a picture of Savory Breakfast Croissant Casserole!  I was so happy she took the time to make one of my recipes and that it turned out so well!

Friday Five {What I've Been Drinking}

One of the greatest challenges I have with blogging is the completely self-centered and egocentric nature of it.  It requires a mixture of confidence, narcissism and vulnerability. While I always strive to be authentic, I really struggle with being open and not becoming completely consumed with ME.  Because, in all reality, Martha Chartreuse is a journal of my thoughts, feelings, projects, concerns and consumption.  Not because I have an inflated concept of self, but, because I want to share great finds, recipes and projects!  I would love to know what you would like to see featured on the blog, the products you love, and learn more about you you you!!!

Because at the end of this post the personal pronoun count is a whopping: 39

Please, tell me more about you!!!

But until then, what I have been drinking....

Mint Tea
I drink A LOT of tea.  Several pots a day status.  While I try to pick up a few different options I always have a box or two of Moroccan Mint on hand!

Aria Gin + Grapefruit Juice
I met Ryan at The Wildwood and absolutely fell in with his take on gin!  Aria is not of the Christmas Tree variety but far more subtle and enjoyable.  I have yet to make this drink for a guest and they weren't asking for seconds.  I mix with with freshly juiced grapefruit and a few dashes of orange bitters.

Nighty Night
I was recently gifted a Conscious Box!  While the collection of goodies included many wonderful items my favorite sampler was the Night Night tea.  I had one cup an hour before bed time and didn't wake up once. That is not a normal for me.  The next morning I was refreshed, well rested and full of energy.  Not at all groggy!
Cucumber Lemon Water
When I am not chugging cups of tea, I am chugging glasses of water.  I'm a big fan of hydration!  In order to mix things up, I make pitchers of cucumber lemon water.  I slice up half of a cucumber and one lemon and let the water infuse for at least 5 hours.  I continue to add room temperature water to the pitcher which I keep refrigerated.
Pinot Noir
I have a confession to make; I know very, very little about wine!  I know I like it.  I am a fan of reds.  And whites.  Not so much with the pinks.  Prefer things to be on the not-sweet side.  I think that means I like my wine dry?? I have no idea if there are notes of raspberries or cherry blossoms filled with hugs and rainbows.  It is a travesty.  Did I mention Oregon is a top wine producer in the world?  My lack of knowledge is embarrassing. What I do know is that I LOVE the Underwood 2012 Pinot Noir!  It is delicious, affordable and local!  A+++ in my book.

One Photo + No Plan = Roasted Carrot Curry And Coconut Soup

Ladies and Gents {Because Google Analytics tells me 52% of my readers are men},

I am so excited to tell you about the magic that happened in my kitchen last night!  Fair warning, this post has one grainy, dark photo.  This picture is not Pinterest-worthy and barely made the cut to be shared on Instagram.  You see, I have been craving a warm bowl of Spring soup for awhile now.  I wanted something to match this gorgeous weather we have been having.  Plenty of showers with streams of sunlight against the bright foliage and glistening leaves.  A dish cozy enough to enjoy while listening to the evening wind howl at cars splashing through puddles on the pavement.  Yet, nothing so rich or heavy that requires a blanket of snow and a crackling fire.  It also needed to be easy and use basic ingredients I always have on hand.  Ta-Da!!!!  Roasted Carrot Curry and Coconut Soup that will certainly be craved, repeated and bragged about!!

Roasted Carrot Curry and Coconut Soup

1.5 Pounds Rainbow Blend Carrots
1 Yellow Onion
5 Cloves Garlic
1.5 Cups Water
1 TBS Yellow Curry Powder
3 Springs Rosemary
1 TBS Olive Oil
1 Quart Chicken Stock
2 TBS Brown Sugar
2 TSP Cinnamon
1 Can Low-Fat Coconut Milk
Salt & Pepper

1.  Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Clean, peel and roughly chop the carrots, onion and garlic.
2.  In a large, oven-proof pot, mix together the carrots, onion, garlic, water, curry powder, rosemary and olive oil.  Cover with a lid.  Roast for 60 minutes.
3.  Add chicken stock and cook for 30 additional minutes.
4. Remove from oven, remove rosemary stems. Add brown sugar and cinnamon.  Using an immersion blender {or traditional blender in small batches} blend until completely smooth.
5.  Add coconut milk and salt & pepper to taste.

Easter Weekend Recap: Part 2

Following my fun lunch and drinks with Torie I attended Easter Vigil Mass.  It had been a few years since I went to the evening service and forgot just how long it is.  I probably should have had a coffee before!  I was able to sleep in on Sunday and enjoy a leisurely morning drinking coffee before I started to prep and cook Easter Dinner!!

I made a citrus sangria that soaked for two days.  The sangria had a base of white wine and fresh orange juice with slices of oranges, grapefruit and pineapple.  It was light and not overly sweet.

Beautiful Tulips!

My roommate made four different types of deviled eggs; avocado, sour cream, traditional and sweet relish!  They were delicious!!

I picked up a spiral-cut, bone-in ham.  The glaze was very basic and really flavorful!  I mixed together  raspberry jam, dijon mustard, brown sugar and water.  Over medium heat, I brought the sauce to a low simmer and glazed the ham every 15-minutes for the last 75 minutes in the oven.

My friend, Alex, made this salad!  Baby spinach, chevre, candied pecans and blackberries!

Roasted Carrots tossed in EVOO, red pepper flakes, salt and pepper.

Beautiful and delicious veggie tray!

A cozy table with great conversation!

One guest brought this beautiful fruit tart!!

Alex also made delicious scones.  I made sea-salt rice krispy treats!

Easter Weekend Recap: Part 1

This past weekend was jam packed and wonderful!!  Friday night was low key and involved a few house projects.  Saturday started with coffee at Commissary with Rachel!  On my way home I shuffled through all of the pretty pink petals carpeting my neighborhood.

Friday Five {All the Places I'll Go}

I often talk about all of the great things I get to do in Portland, but, the truth of the matter is I have only scratched the surface on all of the adventure this city has to offer.  Since the options are so overwhelming and abundant I have really started to focus on my must-try list and work all of the restaurants and activities into my schedule and budget.  Where do you love to go?  Any suggestions?

Image found here.

Remedy Wine Bar is a mini-hop, one skip and no jump from my apartment but I have yet to check out their happy hour and every changing food menu.  I love a good wine bar and this has a reputation for being top notch!

Ever since my oldest sister, Sarah, and her now-husband, Chris, introduced me to bahn mi I have been in love.  I continue to search for my favorite but hear Double Dragon's is pretty amazing!  They also have miso fries and $5 margaritas!

OX is an Argentinian inspired restaurant well known in the area.  The Montana girl in me has been missing a good steak and the clam chowder looks amazing!  Every time I have tried to go it is packed.  Perhaps a Tuesday night would be more probable.

Anyone who knows me knows that I love my bubbles.  When I moved to Portland last year one of the first events I heard about was #pdxbubbles.  It is an entire week dedicated to "a city-wide celebration of sparkling with Argyle."  I hope to check out a few events, especially the oyster pairing!!

Cathedral Park often shows up in wedding photos, on Instagram and must-do visits.  While I live relatively close I have never been.  I would love to spend an afternoon there taking in the space, reading a book, then wandering over restaurant district nearby and watch the sun go down.

Liebster Award!

Without a doubt, the best part of blogging is all of the wonderful people I have met.  Kayla, over at The Sweet Wonder, was the first person outside of family and friends who commented on the blog.  She is always sending the kindest and most encouraging feedback.  In addition to being so nice this mama-to-be is also a beautiful writer and smarty pants!  I was so flattered when she nominated me for a Liebster Award!

The rules:
1. You must link back to the person who nominated you.
2. You must answer the questions given to you.
3. You must pick ten bloggers to be nominated for the award.
4. You must create ten questions for your nominees.
5. You most notify the nominees.

1. Describe your ideal Friday night.
Since Thursday is my favorite day of the week, Fridays are usually reserved for casual activities.  Perhaps a movie or a happy hour.  Almost always low key.

2. Chocolate, hard, or gummy candy, and what's your favorite?
Chocolate.  Or chocolate covered gummy bears.

3. What TV show or movie has most impacted your life?
This was a hard question for me to answer.  I LOVE TV!  I would have to say the show that has stuck with is Gilmore Girls!  Though, I really love Parenthood, Friday Night Lights, Parks and Rec and Grey's Anatomy.

4. What non-domesticated animal would you like to have as a pet?
Baby Panda!!!!!!

5. Tell us a fashion trend you want to see come back ASAP.
This is a tricky question... I would have to say I would love to see people dress up more.  In recent years I have seen people, especially men, wearing denim to business meetings, conferences, dinner dates and even weddings.  While I love jeans, leggings  and stretch attire, there is a time and place.  Bring back the dress pants!  Bring back the dress!  Bring back the polish!

6. What is your favorite creative outlet?
Cooking.  No doubt about that.  It is where I feel most confident, challenged and can work through anything in my head.

7. I pay for your next vacation. Yay! Where are you going?
Greece for two weeks!

8. Who is the most important person in your life?
My goodness, these questions are hard!!  I have a really amazing family and they are all important to me.  I am going to have to go with my mom on this one.  She is my biggest cheerleader and the most selfless person I know.  She always gives 200% at work, home and in the community.  While I will save all of the gushing for a future post, I must say, I have no idea what I would do without her.  She lifts me up when I am down and keeps me in check when my head gets too big.

9. What's your favorite season and why?
Fall!  I love the fashion, colors, food and warmth.

10. Where do you go to feel inspired?
Living in Portland, OR is inspiring all of the time.  The grocery stores are beautiful. The coffee is artisan.  The ice cream is the best in the world. The people are smart.  The trees are even inspiring.

Tossing the Script

Beauty Brunch PDX + Savory Breakfast Croissant Casserole

This past weekend Jane and Rachel hosted the most adorable and fun beauty brunch for bloggers and nail polish junkies.  It was an absolute blast and the perfect way to start off a sunny Saturday.  The ladies set up a mimosa bar and picked up pastries from little t baker and Pearl Bakery.  I even brought a simple casserole to share with the ladies (Recipe Below).  They turned to Something Borrowed for beautiful service ware and and vintage accessories.  So vintage I even spotted my grandmother's china!!  After eating snacks and making mimosas we headed over to the manicure station.

It was so nice catching up with the ladies and making new friends!  Bee and I were able to brainstorm the perfect neighborly welcome; in a city like Portland where dietary restrictions are vast and diverse it can be tricky.  While we would both love a pie, Mrs. Meyers goodies or a plant seem like the safest options!  I was able to talk fashion and reminisce about Delias with Kelsey.  Chloe is beyond sweet and just started a travel blog!  Miss Erin is the queen of bakeries and just so happens to live very, very close to me.  I have every intention of tricking her into cake-based happy hours.

Thank you, again, ladies for all of your hard work!!!  I had a great time!

See that casserole?? It was my contribution to the party.  A savory breakfast croissant casserole that requires a handful of ingredients and can be prepared the night before!  It is a very filling dish and would be perfect for Easter brunch, Mother's Day, or a baby shower.

Friday Five {Blogs I Love}

Via
The blogging world is huge, inspiring and overwhelming.  There are so many unique, creative and informative spaces on the world wide web.  While my Blogloving account is overflowing, I would love to share some of my favorites!

How do you keep up with all of your blogs?  Do you have favorites?  What do you look for?

Aspiring Kennedy//Based in the UK, Lauren, her husband and their adorable baby are living the ex-pat life!  Her writing is beautiful, advice is spot on and it is so incredibly genuine.

Love and Lemons//Lemons are my favorite ingredient, so it made sense that I started following this a few years back.  The recipes are healthy, easy and tasty!

The Beauty Department//The Lauren Conrad collaboration is by far my favorite beauty blog.  The tutorials are easy to follow and the content is so diverse.  It never bores me!

Torie + Tristan//Torie and I are actually good friends from college!  She and her husband are living the newlywed life up in Seattle.  Her taste is impeccable and she is always ahead of the curve!

Dinner a Love Story//I always salivate when reading this blog.  I have tried many of the recipes and have never been let down.  Jenny's voice is so beautiful and humorous.

Commissary Cafe, Greens and Selfies {What I'm Loving Now}

Commissary Cafe is a relatively new spot in Portland and just so happens to be a few blocks from my apartment.  The coffee is robust, the food tasty and everyone who works there is so kind!  The space is truly inspiring and lust-worthy!  The giant windows and skylights keep everything light and bright, while taking in the beautifully tree-lined street.  The furnishings are simple yet memorable, lending themselves to the beautiful architectural features.  The cafe also houses a very distinct piece of mirror art.  It is a social media darling and some kind of hack is certainly in the works.  I have no doubt about that.  I am already trying to find ways to capture this "feeling" in my own home.  What spaces and shops inspire you?

Spring Meals

Spring has arrived in Portland and I certainly don't hate it!  The days have been sunny, it gets greener every day and the happiness is radiating from everyone's face!  We have also had rather consistent evening rain storms which smell fantastic.

Another perk of Spring is the light, healthy,  and yummy meals.  Last night I prepared artichokes and warmed up a medley of olives.  It was very easy and felt like such a special treat.  My friend who joined us for dinner had never had artichokes outside of dip.  How do you like your artichokes?  Do you have a favorite Spring meal?

Sunday Selfies

Selfies aren't really my thing.  I would much rather share pictures of my food or environment, not my mug.  I don't mind being in group photos taken by others, or, even orchestrating said shot.  This past Sunday, after lots of cleaning and a light work out I snuggled up with my roommates dog, Athena, while we all chatted.  Snuggles are to Athena, like selfies are to me.  So, this show of affection and quality snuggle time needed to be captured.  Hey, if Athena is willing to go out of her comfort zone to make me happy, I can go out of mine to photograph the milestone!  Do you selfie?

Friday Five {Sister Sister}

Next week marks the birthday of one of my most favorite people in the whole wide world; my older sister!  So, in honor of her anniversary of life, Friday Five is all about Stephy J and what makes her so awesome!

Notre Dame Cathedral
She is always up for trying new things.  Hikes, runs, museums, recipes, etc.  And the girl loves Macaroons!!  We have tested, critiqued and kept notes on dozens of macaroon flavors.  We know, it is a tough job but someone has to do it.

A sea of macaroons
She makes things fun; even when you are wet, hungry and tired.   While in Paris, we had spent the day trekking around Monmarte, climbing the hills, exploring stores and getting somewhat lost.  In the rain.  Instead of throwing a pity party we popped into a cafe, ate Pomme Frites {American Style} and chair danced to French Abba!

She loves Gilmore Girls and is almost always willing to binge watch it with me.  She also references real life situations back to Stars Hallow!  Need I say more?

Shenanigans in North Portland
The girl can cook!  For our parent's 2013 Holiday Party she made marshmallows!!  They were clearly the hit of the party.  It is probably wrong to ask someone to make you a special treat on their birthday, right?!?!

NPR Swag
She is a fantastic and thoughtful gift-giver!  For my college graduation she and my oldest sister gifted me a goat!  She also gifts NPR Swag and fancy pastries just because!  She is always thinking of others.

Always making me laugh!
